“Doesn’t no pain mean everything is fine?”
Breast cancer may cause no pain or noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That is why it is important not to judge breast health based on pain alone. Of course, having one of the symptoms below does not automatically mean breast cancer, but any new or persistent change should be checked.
1. A New Lump in the Breast
One of the most common warning signs is a new lump or mass in the breast or underarm area.
It may feel firm or less movable than the surrounding tissue. However, benign tumors and cysts can also feel like lumps.
If you notice something unusual, try not to assume the worst. The best step is to have it properly evaluated.
2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape
One breast may suddenly look larger, swollen, or different in shape compared with before.
It is normal for breasts to be slightly different in size, but a new or noticeable change should be checked.
3. A Nipple Turns Inward
A nipple that was previously normal may suddenly become inverted or point in a different direction.
This can sometimes happen for harmless reasons, but if the change is new, it is worth getting medical advice.
4. Unusual Nipple Discharge
Nipple discharge when you are not pregnant or breastfeeding may need evaluation, especially if the discharge contains blood.
Rather than thinking, “It’s only a little, so it must be fine,” it is safer to find out what is causing it.
5. The Skin Looks Like an Orange Peel
The skin of the breast may become thickened, swollen, or dimpled, creating a texture that looks similar to an orange peel.
Redness or warmth may also occur.
Even if it looks like a simple skin problem, persistent changes should be examined.
6. A Lump or Swelling Appears in the Armpit
Lymph nodes in the underarm area may become enlarged and feel like a lump.
Infections and other conditions can also cause swollen lymph nodes, but if the lump lasts for a long time or continues to grow, medical evaluation is recommended.
7. Persistent Changes in One Breast
Breast pain alone does not necessarily mean breast cancer.
However, persistent pain, pulling sensations, skin changes, or other unusual changes in one breast should not be ignored.
This is especially important if several symptoms occur together.
Early Breast Cancer May Have No Symptoms
Breast cancer is not always discovered because symptoms appear.
In the early stages, there may be no obvious discomfort at all. That is why regular screening based on your age and personal risk factors is important.
Become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, and seek medical advice if you notice a new lump, nipple changes, skin changes, or unusual nipple discharge.
