7 Warning Signs of a Heart Attack: Don’t Ignore the Signals Your Body Is Sending

“Is this just indigestion, or is something wrong with my heart?”

Heart problems can sometimes begin with symptoms that seem surprisingly ordinary.

A heart attack, medically known as an acute myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, causing damage to the heart muscle. When warning signs appear, getting medical help quickly can make a major difference.

1. Pressure or Tightness in the Chest

One of the most common warning signs is pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest.

It may feel as if a heavy weight is sitting on your chest. The discomfort may last for several minutes or go away and come back.

2. Pain Spreading to the Arms, Shoulders, Back, or Jaw

Heart attack pain does not always stay in the chest.

Discomfort may spread to one or both arms, the shoulders, back, neck, or jaw. If this happens together with chest discomfort, it should be taken seriously.

3. Sudden Shortness of Breath

You may suddenly feel unusually short of breath during activities that normally would not be difficult.

In some cases, breathing difficulty can occur even while resting. Shortness of breath may also appear before or without noticeable chest pain.

4. Sudden Cold Sweats

If you suddenly break out in a cold sweat even though you are not exercising or in a hot environment, do not automatically assume it is just stress.

Cold sweating combined with chest pressure, dizziness, or weakness can be an important warning sign.

5. Nausea or Stomach Discomfort

A heart attack can sometimes feel similar to indigestion.

Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, or a feeling of fullness. Because of this, heart symptoms may occasionally be mistaken for digestive problems.

6. Sudden Dizziness and Extreme Fatigue

Unexpected weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling as though you may faint can occur during a heart attack.

Women, older adults, and people with diabetes may sometimes experience less typical symptoms, such as severe fatigue or shortness of breath, rather than obvious chest pain.

7. Unusual Anxiety or Heart Palpitations

A racing, pounding, or irregular heartbeat may occur along with a sudden sense of anxiety or uneasiness.

Stress and caffeine can also cause similar sensations, but if palpitations occur together with chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, or dizziness, medical attention may be necessary.

Important Reminder

Heart attack symptoms are not the same for everyone.

If you suddenly experience chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, or pain spreading to the arms, back, neck, or jaw, do not wait for the symptoms to disappear.

Call emergency medical services immediately and avoid driving yourself to the hospital.
